Welcome to the world of stained glass! In this immersive summer course your child will spend 5 half days, totaling 15 hours learning about glass art. They willl learn how to make a stained glass suncatcher, a fused glass nightlight or dish in the kiln, and a mosaic project. Yes, your child can really make a beautiful piece of stained glass and learn the craft in just one week!
Perfect for those budding artists with no glass experience or those with prior experience this hands-on workshop covers the essentials of glass safety, glass cutting, grinding, foiling, soldering, how glass melts in a kiln and mosaicing.
These week -long sessions blend art, craftsmanship, and fun in a supportive studio environment. No prior experience needed—just a love for color, creativity, and learning something new!
Logistics and Terms:
- Duration: 5 days M-F, 17.5 hours total
- Time:
- Ages 14-18, 8.30am to 12pm or 1pm to 4.30pm
- Cost: $350 per child
- No prerequisites required, waiver will be signed on first day drop off.
- Refund Policy - No refunds on deposit once paid, if unable to attend with 72 hrs notice, credit is transferrable.
Rough Schedule:
Day One - We will spend some time showing equipment and safety in the studio, your child will choose their stained glass design pattern, choose colors and learn how to cut glass.
Day Two - We will review safety quickly, learn how to grind glass and learn how to apply a copper foil tape.
Day Three - This will be our soldering day! Your teen will learn essential soldering safety and use a soldering iron to solder their stained glass creations together. We will also discuss what fused glass is, with examples, and they will start their fused glass creations.
Day Four - We will finish our fused glass creations and start our mosaic creations.
Day Five - We will finish our mosaics and learn how to grout. All three projects will be ready to take home by end of day!
Extra Info and Safety:
- Proper glass safety and PPE will be covered and provided as this is essential when working with glass. Respirators, safety glasses, gloves, fume extractors, and heavy metal hand soap is used in this studio, we take our safety seriously.
- We do use a tin lead solder in the class as this is the preferential solder for its flow and heat properties, if you would like your child to work with lead free solder, there will be an additional $15 charge as it is significantly more expensive.
- During multiple times of the day we require the students wash their hands with a soap that removes any contaminants, solder particles or chemical residue if spilled and to prevent spread.
- Water and snack will be provided, if your child has any dietary requirements please let us know ahead of time and we will let you know if we can accommodate, otherwise please pack a snack and drink.
- There will be a minimum of 1 teachers per class of 6 teens at any time ensuring we have ample support for your child and can answer and support any and all questions.
- We will use stools at a workbench, if you require a lower table and chair, please let me know before class so I can make accomodations!
